I grew up between roots and tide.

I grew up between Salvador and the Island of Bom Jesus dos Passos, in a family of shellfish gatherers and fishers. The ocean came first. Geology came on its own, shortly after.

I now live on Waiheke Island, in New Zealand, where the coastal volcanic geology gives me a new way of looking at the same questions. Three countries. Three different relationships between a community and its environment.

It was past ten in the evening when I learned the sea was lit. An electric blue came from inside the water, millions of cells that respond to the touch of the waves by transforming their very fright into light.

Between 1990 and 2023, the island lost around 6 hectares of dense vegetation, almost a fifth of what existed. The number comes from Google Earth Engine. But there is a layer of loss that no satellite image records.
